There was some early confusion today over just what "shrunk" in this latest slate of .NET Framework releases, but after going through the releases ourselves, we discovered what some Microsoft spokespersons meant to say in the beginning: The latest SP1 adds a new concept called the .NET Framework Client Profile, which enables an application's setup routine to include only those features it may require to serve as a .NET client, on a Windows platform where .NET Framework is not automatically installed -- for instance, XP SP2 or SP3, or Windows Server 2003. In short, it's a reduced profile for client-only applications that don't require the entire .NET to be distributed with them, and don't have the luxury of the entire .NET pre-installed.

Mozilla Labs considers grafting IM onto Firefox

With Mozilla Labs in the news recently, even if it's for bold ideas that have yet to find their way to source code, the organization is taking advantage of this added attention to float an idea for a possible future Firefox permutation: What if instant messaging, RSS, and other concurrent textual feeds such as Twitter, were embedded in the Web browser in such a way that any kind of personal message could be made to appear through a single channel?

Ex-Googler creates 'Cuil' search engine, but results fall short of rivals

New search engine Cuil has opened to the public, and with it, the requisite comparisons and challenges to Google, former employer of Cuil's engineering team. But the site is experiencing much downtime in its first day.

Built with $33 million in venture capital from Greylock Partners, Madrone Capital Partners, and Tugboat Ventures, Cuil is made up of an all-star team of Web technology veterans. The husband and wife founders are Tom Costello, creator of Xift, and Anna Patterson, creator of Recall, a technology now used by Google. Rounding out the team are ex-Google engineers Russell Power and Louis Monier, also the ex-CTO of AltaVista.

At Microsoft's Financial Analyst Meeting Thursday, Bill Veghte, who heads up the company's Windows and online services division, said that Windows 7 is progressing well and confirmed that Internet Explorer 8 will ship before the end of the year.
