Even before the traditional keynote from Steve Ballmer, Microsoft met the press at the CES 2011 to unveil some of its projects on Windows 8, the next version of its operating system.

The new feature support for Windows 8 chips SoC or System on a chip. In practice, this means that Windows 8 will run on ARM processors (in particular). Aware of the delay on the market including tablets, Microsoft had to react. The reaction is somewhat unexpected, since for years now Microsoft develops software and operating systems primarily for the x86 architecture initiated by Intel.

Windows 8, Microsoft will therefore support the x86 and ARM. The software giant has presented preliminary versions of Windows 8 operating on Snapdragon. Beyond the ad, we must realize that porting Windows 8 on ARM will cause a number of issues. The first of which is application compatibility. The publisher has already shown working on an ARM-compatible version of Office. It remains to see how things will be the repository for existing Windows. In terms of partnerships, Microsoft discusses the major industry names such as Intel, of course, but also AMD NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments.

As for the possibility of system Windows Phone 7 suitable for tablets, this ad is clearly the case in parentheses for the moment. Because the primary goal of Microsoft with ARM port is of course to position themselves in the lucrative market for tablets, whose volumes are estimated for 2011 by financial analysts at 50 million units worldwide. But then, Windows 8 will not happen before 2012!
